Cullens of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, England
These pages will be presented in various formats depending on the status of the research being done on them. As such, you are encouraged to forward any information you may wish to add to these pages. There are many branches on the tree of Nottinghamshire Cullens and it is a difficult task to track them all.
: There are many Cullen families descended from the main line of the Rude Forefathers but some are only partial family histories; the documentation has not yet been found which connects them with with any amount of certainty. These isolated branches will be posted here and the suspected connections discussed.
: Thomas Cullen was elected Mayor of Nottingham in 1852. You'd think that such a prominent figure would appear in at least one family history. Not so. Thomas has been very hard to track down but at least enough information has been collected to be able to put together a page concerning the family of the Mayor - a family still in the process of being rediscovered. : This is in letter form and covers some of the families that descended from the Thomas Cullen (1703-1773) who married Elizabeth Flinders (see Rud Fathers) in 1729. Some of the families are found today in New Zealand. Some settled in Eastwood, founding one of the more glamorous branches of the family (modern descendants of them are not known - maybe you?).
: Closely related to the Eastwood group of Cullens (above), this line is also descended from Thomas 'the Elder' but emigrated to Guelph in Ontario, Canada for some years. Later, after a brief return to England, the family emigrated again and founded the well known branch of Cullens of Maungaturoto, New Zealand.
: This is currently in letter form and concerns one William Cullen born in Averham, Nottinghamshire about 1835. He later relocated to Lincolnshire (May of 1860) where he married Elizabeth Wilson. A lot of chimney sweeps in this family and there is a photograph of William also - take a look and see if he resembles anyone in your family tree!
: Some of the families descended from Gervase Cullen who was born in Nottinghamshire in 1777,8 and later relocated to Brant Broughton in Lincolnshire where he married Mary Horner. Known descendants of these families are found in Yorkshire and Northampton.
: This has been the most difficult of all the Lincolnshire branches of the Cullen family to sort out since I have yet to meet anyone related to them or having researched them. Gervase and Anne (Manners) Cullen relocated to Westborough, Lincs from Averham, Notts where they were married in 1745. their descendants are traced in Great Gonerby, Lincs.
: Thomas Cullen, another son of Gervase and Anne (Manners) Cullen, founded the branch of the Cullen family in Dry Doddington, Lincolnshire. Thanks to the efforts of descendants of this family, there is much more information available than there is for the Cullens of Great Gonerby.
: John F. Atterton, the researcher who outlined the large group of Cullen families in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, was born in Grantham, Lincs. in 1875. His work traces the Cullen family tree back to Richard Cullen who died in 1579/80 at Upton, Notts. Mr. Atterton's maternal grandmother was Anne Cullen from one of the Brant Broughton Cullen families.
