 | Descendants of William and Elizabeth (Richards) Cullen of Radford, Nottinghamshire, England Andy Johnson of Lancashire, England |
Many thanks to Andy Johnson for forwarding this Cullen Family History. This Cullen family history is particularly interesting in that the family is from Radford, Nottinghamshire, England. There is a well known group of Cullen descendants in Radford who descend from the Cullens of Upton by Southwell. Though the connection has not yet been made there is little doubt that they tie in one generation back from the William below who was born around 1808. If anyone knows anything more about these families, please let us know.
Andy Johnson's Cullen/Johnson/Carver family tree is now online at www.gomm.net. The best way to access it is via www.gomm.net. Follow the link to the 'Family Tree Research Centre' and then the link to 'Related Trees'. From there you can access Andy Johnson's tree. You may also follow this link directly to Andy Johnson's Cullen/Johnson/Carver family tree. There are 484 individuals in 155 families, including 130 different surnames. You will find details on 84 members of the Cullen family, including many of Andy's notes.
UPDATE!: Andy has had surprisingly good success in tracking down his Cullen relatives through his hard work and the extra effort he's made to keep the webpage up to date. We are waiting to hear more from the newly discovered branch of the family. Of particular interest is a copy of an indenture executed in Nottingham on October 20, 1794 between William Cullen, son of Benjamin Cullen, and his father to learn the trade of framework knitting. This is significant in that Benjamin Cullen is a well known figure in the Cullen family of Nottingham. The fact that Andy should come across this reference through his own family indicates that his Cullen connection may indeed be to the well known family in Radford descended from the Cullens of Upton by Southwell.
Not surprisingly, these Cullen families were rich in linen merchants and manufacturers. The history of this family, as well as other families involved in the linen or lace industry, followed a similiar pattern of emigration. Some descendants, such as Andy, remained in England or Scotland. Others went abroad. There is a branch of the family in the area of Bordertown, South Australia.
Below the family tree you will find an informative collection of notes and sources on the first family in the tree: William & Elizabeth (Richards) Cullen and their five children (Eliza Richards, William, Emma, Elizabeth, and Charles).
