My ancestors, 2 brothers, arrived in Halifax, Canada aro 1867 and eventually settled in the Chateauguay Valley in southern Quebec, Canada.
My fathers name was William Archibald Cullen. His father was James ?. Cullen. His Father was William ?. Cullen. I believe they came from Scotland. Any information greatly appreciated.

Looking for any information about the Cullens buried in Westburn cemetery. Lair 684 purchased by Daniel McNab in 1892 and later transferred to John Cullen 1905. Buried there is Margaret Cole, William Cullen, Jane Campbell McNab.

I am researching my family tree and have a Margaret Cullen born c1852 daughter of a Thomas Cullen and Catherine Cullen (maiden name Madden), all down as being born in Ireland (no idea where). Family living in Partick Lanark Scotland in 1874 when Margaret married a William Loughlin (various spellings). I was wondering if anyone could help me. My maiden name was Cullen. My father is John Donaldson Cullen born in Glasgow in 1923. His father was John Cullen who married Helen Hunter Drummond (born 1900) in 1921. Helen was born in Tillicoultry (?), Stirling and was a tartan weaver. John was a Master Plasterer (amongst other things). John and Donaldson are family names that appear alternately. John's father was John Donaldson Cullen. Somewhere in the past a John Cullen married an Elizabeth Donaldsen (who was Danish). John and Helen (Nellie) moved to Cape Town in South Africa in about 1930-31. I was born in 1950 in Cape Town South Africa. My family moved to Australia in 1959 and we are still here. Can you please tell me where I can search information on my forebears? My father (now 81) is trying to find out information about his family.

In the late 1800's in Canada, Scottish Cullens were uncommon. I am looking for information concerning Mildred Butler and William Cullen. In the Canadian census of 1901 William claimed he was Scottish. They had several children: William, Ethel, Daisy, George, Edward and Violet.

I would like to find out more about my wandering coal miner Cullens. The earliest evidence I have is the 1881 UK census. It lists Elizabeth Cullen 38 years old b. Kilmarnok, Ayr coal miners wife living at Polton Hall 4, Cockpen, Edinburgh. Her husband George is not listed with the family. Then come the children George 19 Hurlford, Ayr coal miner. Robert 15 Kilbirnie, Ayr coal miner. Isabella 13 Blantrye, Lanark mill worker. Alexander 10 Cockpen, Edinburgh scholar. John 7 Uddingston, Lanark. Elizabeth 5 Larkhall, Lanark. Jane 3 Cockpen, Edinburgh. My husband's great grandfather was Robert Cullen. Here is where it gets muddled. Robert married Alice Lark dec 1890. Alice had an illegitimate dau Elizabeth born April 1889. All 3 are listed together ( as Cullen) on the 1891 census living on Hill St. Baines Block, Clackmannan. My husband's grandmother was Elizabeth Cullen b 1905 (per marriage license) or 1898 ( sworn affidavit). She had an older brother George who was with the RAF in WW1 (again per the marriage license). I was hoping to check the 1901 census to see if there were 2 Elizabeths in the house.

I have come across a wonderful print of Lord William Cullen de Grant of St. James. It must be from the late 17th century judging by the wig etc. He was possibly from Edinburgh. There is also a Lord Cullen's Close deep in the Old Town (it may not be accessible now). Anyone know anything?

I'm researching a shipwreck in 1792 where two of the survivors were Mrs. Isabella Cullen and her younger daughter Margaret Frederica. Isabella was the eldest daughter of Sir Archibald Hope of Craighall, and about 32 at the time of the wreck. In 1778 she married Lieut William Cullen (who probably came from the Peterculter area) who subsequently went onto half pay and then left the army, probably to go to India as an Indigo planter. Isabella lost her elder daughter, name unknown, in the wreck, but she and Margaret finally reached India in early 1794, and there she rejoined William and they had various children whose birth dates I found at the IOLR/British Library. Margaret married the son of an east indiaman captain, Locke, in 1809.

William Cullen rejoined the army out in India, became a Colonel in the Scots Brigade in 1801. Isabella had returned to England in 1799, and outlived her husband by many years, dying in Edinburgh in 1842. If anyone can help get a bit of flesh on the bones of who these Cullens were, I would be very grateful and would willingly share what I know.

My grandfather, Matthew Cullen, was born in Brooklyn, NY USA circa 1880 but went back at some point to Glasgow (Renfrew). Married Mary McGloin, a Renfrew native. Returned to Brooklyn circa 1915-17.

My grandfather's name was Matthew Cullen, born in Brooklyn, NY circa 1880, but returned to old country at some unknown date. I don't know which County that was but I recall family talk of trips to Manorhamilton, Co. Lietrim (maybe Summer holidays maybe more regular) from Scotland. Matthew's marriage certificate to Mary McGloin was made out in Renfrew (Glascow) where he was a working resident. Mary was born there. My father's sister was born in Scotland and was 2, no more than 4 years older so that means they came to US 1915-1917. Matthew had a brother named Phillip. No other info on him. They were Catholic. Manorhamilton seems to be the common link.

My wife (Evelyn Cullen) and I are trying to trace back the Cullen side of the family. We have reached Matthew b 1799/1800 m Janet Cooper (Coupar) 26/10/1823 d 1870. Matthew was probably from the Barony area of Lanarkshire although there is some evidence that the family came originally from Dunfermline. We are pretty sure that his father was James b 1782 m Mary Steven d 1856. His mother may have been a "Pollock".

From Matthew onwards the whole family seems to have been in the cotton industry in and around Glasgow and interestingly enough found life difficult during the American Civil War which disrupted supplies of cotton to the UK.

We have reasonable details of the family from Matthew onwards and would gladly share that if anyone is interested.

Joseph Cullen, born in the 1850's, had a son named William (my great Grandad) who was born in 1882. William had a sister named Sarah who was born in Greengares (Airdrie). He also had three brothers; two died but one was named Stewart. William married Margaret Gibson in 1923 and had a daughter Catherine. He married again and his second wife's name was Helen Ingles. They they had the following children: Margaret, Robert (my Grandad), Janet, Helen, and John. William lived most of his live in Shotts. Robert, son of William, was a minister who travelled much of the time and died sometime around 1979.

My name is Christopher Cullen. I have already posted to the main area I think. I am looking for links to my Edinburgh Cullen family. My grandfather (Sheriff K.D. Cullen of Edinburgh, Dundee, Selkirk etc.1899-1956) has been mentioned before I think. His father was Lord William James Cullen (d.1941), whose obituary has already been mentioned in the Scotland section. Personally, I do not know anything of earlier generations, but my father Lord Douglas Cullen does. I plan to post what he has researched ( in the 1970's) soon. My gr-grandfather, John Cullen (b.1836), left Ireland and moved to Edinburgh, Scotland about 1885 with part of his family. In the 1891 census, they were living at 88 High St. His mother-in-law, Mary Roden Gilhooly, was living at 107 High St. The Rodens may have come from Scotland. His children (those that moved with him) were Stephen (b.1865, later moved to New Castle), Anne (b.1875, married Hannan), Joseph (b.1877), and Peter (b.1868). Any information on the descendents of his children would be appreciated.

WILLIAM CULLEN born 1825 Gurverie, Scotland and died in 1890. His wife was MARY CUNNINGHAM MARSHALL, married in Shots Kirks, Scotland. She was born in 1833 in Salisburgh, Scotland and she died in 1898. They had four children:

Archibald Cullen married MARY BARTHOLOMEW CALLENDER (b. Apr 23, 1868 Glasco, Scot. and d. Mar 21, 1942 Upper St Clair Township, Pittsburgh, PA). They had three children: John Bartholomew Cullen (wife Mame), Andrew Livingston Cullen (wife Charlotte), and Jean Cameron Cullen (husband James Ellis).

Would appreciate any help in finding out more about this Cullen family.

Hi there my name is Ann Langdon (Cullen). I was born in Preston England. I am the youngest of four. My fathers name was George Martin Cullen. My Mothers name was Monica Joan Cullen. My sisters and brother are Sheila born in 1946 Christopher born in 1948 Susan born 1950 and Ann 1955. My dads family came from Cumbria Scotland. George was the youngest of 12. I don't know his parents names. George was born in 1920's. Some of his family names are John, Masey, Basil, Nelly. The rest ????? My mothers dad's name was Christopher Burns I think his family came from Glousteshire? My Mothers moms name was Ann Burns but I don't know her name before she married or where she is from. My Mother Monica died at age 31 leaving us kids. Dad never told us much about his family or my mother's. Since George was the youngest of his family I don't think there would be any in his family left alive. My Dad died at age 65 that was 15 years ago. We have been in Canada since 1965. I know that my Mother is in St. Mary's Cemetary in Leyland so is her mother and father.

The following obituary appeared in the New York Times 20 June 1941:

"Lord CULLEN, former judge of the Supreme Courts of Scotland, died yesterday at his home in Edinburgh at the age of 82. He was appointed to the court in 1909 and retired in 1925. His knowledge of bankruptcy obtained for him the chairmanship of the departmental committee, resulting in the new Scottish bankruptcy act in 1913.

Lord William James CULLEN, Writer to the Signet in 1884 and Advocate in 1891, was named Sheriff of Fife and Kinross in 1906. He married Grace RUTHERFURD in 1888."

I would appreciate hearing from anyone with connections to this family.

I am having great difficulty researching these Irish names, they are from Co Down, and Cavan, can anyone help??

My Gt Grandmother born abt 1852 in Johnston, Renfrew, Scotland - daughter of James Cullen an Isabella Sloan. James Cullen [Callin, Collins] and Isabella Sloan were married on May 28, 1837 in Paisley, Scotland but both came from Ireland. James Cullen was born abt 1817 in Co Cavan, Ireland and Isabella was born abt 1819 in Co Down. They had at least 2 children, Martha and George. I know George was the 8th child born (b.1855), and at that time Isabella had 2 boys and 2 girls deceased, and 3 girls living. but names I don't know at this point.

I can not seem to get any headway in Ireland to finding James parents etc. Maybe someone out there can help ?

My great grandmother was Ellen Cullen from Scotland. Ellen was the daughter of Elizabeth Cullen, Ellen was born about 1873, she married Hugh Forrester Nov 24,1903. They had 2 sons; Henry James and John Cullen Forrester. As far as we know Ellen's mother was not married but we think her father's name was Johnson or Johnston. Ellen and Hugh were married at Whiteinch, District of Patrick, County of Lanark, Scotland. If you have any information that you think might be helpful to me I would appreciate hearing from you.
