HomepageAdministration Bond of Katherine Cullen
Widow of Upton: 1705
Jim Cullen

We believe that this is the administration bond of Katherine Cullen, widow of Upton, who's husband Gervase Cullen died in 1665/1666. Her estate was an enormous sum of £300 and yet she had no will. Her children were: Susanna b.1649, Thomas b.1652, Mary b.1654, Deborah b.1656, Katherine b.1660, Gervase b.1662, and Sarah b.16664. Katherine remained a widow until her death in 1705. She was buried next to her husband (it is assumed) on March 5, 1705 in the church yard of St Peter & St Paul's church in Upton, Nottinghamshire. In the bond below, two of the signatories are her sons, Gervase Cullen and Thomas Cullen, both of whom must have been of some standing in order to be bound for the sum of three hundred pounds. Their signatures appear at the bottom of the document instead of their 'marks', meaning that both of them were literate and comfortable with having to sign documents for legal purposes. Literacy was unusually high in Upton at the time and especially so for the elite families such as the Cullens.
