HomepageWill of Gervase Cullen, Yeoman of Upton
Written Oct 29, 1708 - Proved Dec 4, 1708
Jim Cullen

Gervase Cullen, Yeoman of Upton, was a man of some substance and status in the community. His wife's name was Theodosia and, though we don't yet have a record of their marriage, we do have a solid understanding of their family due to recorded baptisms of their children from 1693 to 1702. According to the will, he had five children at the time of his death, all under the age of 21. They were: (1) Gervase Cullen, son b.1702. He seems to have inherited the bulk of the specific arable lands in the East and Middle fields. (2) Frances, daughter b.1693. (3) Sarah, daughter b.1694. (4) Mary, daughter b.1694. (5) John, son born 1698 or 1699. There is a record of the burial of Theodosia Cullen, widow, on Jun 24, 1738 at Upton.

The will is striking in that it consists of about three full pages and contains a wealth of property. I found the descriptions of the various fields and the names of the owners to be intriguing details. Being a very diverse landowner, he didn't have just one field ... he held a mix of arable land (for crops), meadow for hay and grazing, and pasture as well. This diversity suggests a profitable farm operation. Equally impressive was that he owned a "dwelling House" (or primary residence) and at least one "Cottage House" which he rented out to a tenant named Harold Graves. Owning rental property in those early times was a clear sign of wealth and status in small villages such as Upton.
