'Pen' means pensioner, but this seems to have had a meaning other than the modern definition.

The Memoirs are a detailed history of the northern half of Ireland during the times immediately preceding the Famine. They document a wide range of topics for the area including geography, land-holdings, population, cities, buildings, local history, employment, and local market information. There are even details concerning zoology and climate. Taken as a whole, the Memoirs are indispensable as a source of information for creating an image of the life and times of those who lived in this part of the country in the early 1800's. The Cullen family is mentioned and, as can be expected, they were members of the Manorhamilton group of Cullen families. Many of the names will be recognized and do appear in the Pedigree of the Cullen Family, written by David Cullen of Lackagh Lodge about 1860. Mentions of the Cullens appear in the Memoirs in the Union of Manorhamilton, Parishes of Cloonclare, Cloonlogher, and Killasnet, dated April of 1837. Some details extracted from the Memoirs and are as follows:

• Concerning the Poor and Schools, a Mr. Cullin of Glenade is mentioned as leaving, in 1824, 12 pounds a year for 12 widows. The Cullins and the rector are also named as Trustees for McMaster's charity, which amounted to 20 pounds a year, for the education of 40 Protestant scholars.
• Gentlemen's seats: Colonel Cullin's house, located in a small park in Screeny, is described as a two-story whitewashed building with white slates, having been built 150 years prior but still in fair condition. Those interested in the Cullens of Glenfarn may be interested in Glenfarn House, on the Tottenham estate on Lough McNain. Though not yet 20 years old at the time and having extensive gardens, the estate is described as being in bad repair.
• Glenade House, on the road from Manorhamilton to Ballyshannon, situated on the banks of the lough, was erected in 1834 at the cost of 3000 pounds. A house called Rockwood in Deerpark is also noted.
• Sir Frederick Hamilton, a Scotch and an officer in the army, built the castle at Manorhamilton in 1641. He rebuilt much of the town as well. The castle lasted only seven years, having been burnt down by the Irish due to Sir Frederick's treachery. He fled the country but some of his descendants still remain in Ireland - among them at the time was Charles Henry Tottenham Esquire, who gave the manors of Manorhamilton and Carrickmoiety to his eldest daughters (he had no sons). Colonel Cullin is stated to have had the castle for 30s a year forever.
• At the old church of Cloonclare, we find a tombstone, evidently a plate above the Cullin vault, with a motto and inscription, very similiar to that described by David Cullen in the Pedigree of the Cullen Family - "Here lyeth the body of the Honourable Catherine Cullin alias Bermingham, relict of Captain John Cullin. She departed this life 15[?] Our Lord 1773 aged [?] years.". According to David Cullen, the year should be 1773. In the Index to Prerogative Wills, we find a Catherine Cullen or Birmingham dated 1773. She was a widow then but, according to David Cullen, her husband, Captain John Cullen son of Patrick Mor Cullen, died about 1775.
• The two resident magistrates of Glenade were Mr. Armstrong and Mr. Cullin. Chief proprietors were Mr. Fox, Mr. Tottenham, Messrs Cullins, and Mr. Wynne. Colonel Cullin's farm was more than 40 acres.

In the aftermath of the events of 1798, magistrates were appointed to investigate the claims of those who claimed to have suffered at the hands of the French or the Insurgents. In County Sligo, one of the appointed magistrates was Rev. Carnecross Cullen. The other named magistrates were: William Harloe Phibbs, Esq., Arthur Irwin, Esq., Rev. Charles West, and Rev. W. Duke. Their first meeting was held on September 30, 1799. Rev. Carn Cross Cullen was also Captain of the Manorhamilton Corps of Cavalry. An address and reply from the Sligo Journal of August 23'rd, 1805 was provided as an illustration in The History of Sligo:
