HomepageCollie's Charity of Upton, Nottinghamshire
Charity number: 217938
Jim Cullen

Collie's Charity is a community trust established in the late 16'th centur to manage specific lands and properties for the benefit of the parish of Upton. The charity's core mission was to provide a sustainable source of income to pay for repairs to the parish church of Upton, to maintain the roads within the parish, for the relief of the poor, and to fund equipment or expenses for local men called into military service. Collie's Charity is still active to this day, registered as Charity Number: 217938. I found it very interesting that there were members of the Cullen family on the board of trustees as far back as the late 16'th century, within a decade of the founding of the charity. Thomas Cullen, who appears as a witness in 1580/81, appears to have been a contemporary of Richard Cullen. Richard died this same year and is buried at St Peter & St Paul's in the churchyard. Thomas Cullen, the son of Richard, was about fifteen at the time. Even with the uncertainty about his age, Thomas was nowhere near the age where he could have been entrusted with the affairs of the village, especially with the legal and monetary issues the trustees must have handled at the time. Thomas Cullen the trustee could be a brother, cousin, or possibly an uncle of Richard. Richard's father, by 1580, was already passed on and was also buried in the Upton churchyard.
